Nellie’s (The White Horse Inn), Beverley, West Yorkshire
A pub you will never forget once you’ve experienced it. A warren of older rooms lit only by candles, but with additional more modern facilities making it commercially viable as well as a quirky olde worlde destination.
The Old Coffee House, Soho, London
Pleasingly odd half-tied house with tons of dusty memorabilia and some dingy corners, but with an extensive range of the brewery’s own ales including stand outs the Jamaican Stout and the Citron Saison.
The George and Dragon, Great Budworth, Cheshire
A more quintessentially English country pub you could not wish to meet. Partly dating back to 1722 and opposite the village church this pub becomes a Christmas card image during the winter.
The Union Tavern, Runcorn, Cheshire
Underappreciated and untouched by food service or modernisation, the Union is a real locals pub with a snug, a card school, and outside toilets. No pretence or claims to be more than a local boozer serving the nearby residential streets.
Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield
Everything a pub should be – welcoming and with a decent beer range kept properly. In a city with such a strong pub game you have to really be something special to stand out and this place is.
